When it opened in the fall of 1962, Hamilton High School in Sussex, Wisconsin, had students from Pewaukee, Hartland, Germantown, and even some parts of Wauwatosa. This seemed like an absurdly large area. The building was brand new and was named for Alexander Hamilton, who was one of the most complicated people in American history. It is hard to say if that choice was symbolic or just based on what was best. But after 60 years, the school has become something the original builders probably didn’t have in mind: a highly regarded institution with robotics teams that win regionals, a marching band that has played on the streets of London and Rome, and a football team that has made it to the state semifinals more than once in the last few years.
As you walk around this school, you get the sense that it moves with a calm force. Just the size of the Fine Arts Center—35,000 square feet, an 800-seat house, a full fly stage, and an orchestra pit—shows how serious the institution is. Not all public high schools in Wisconsin have that kind of building. As the years have gone by, it shows that the community has chosen to invest in its kids rather than coast.
The academic picture is fine, but not very exciting. There are almost 18,000 schools ranked in the United States, and Hamilton is ranked 918th out of all of them. About 57% of students take at least one AP exam, and 47% pass one. These numbers suggest that students are being pushed, but this school isn’t the only one that does this. Reading skills are at 64% and math skills are at 55%. 48th grade science. You should pay attention to those middle figures. It’s not always true that high rankings reveal everything that’s going on in the classroom. Hamilton is no different.
The extracurricular life is harder to measure, but it might also be more interesting. Since 2004, Charger Robotics, also known as Team 537, has won regional competitions. The Regional Chairman’s Award has been given to them six times. It’s not luck. To have that kind of long-term success, you need a mentor, a stable institution, and students who choose to stay involved. It’s easy to forget that the team also helps local middle schoolers, but it’s important to note this. There’s more to it than just a trophy shelf.

The music shows all have the same plot. The marching band won first place at the state level more than once, and in 2019 and 2025, they took part in the London New Year’s Day Parade and the Rome parade. At this time of year, Synergy competes all over Wisconsin as a show choir. These programs were not put together overnight; they were built over many years.
At Hamilton High School Sussex, things have not always been smooth. In late 2025, a former student threatened to shoot up the school and was charged with making terrorist threats. This shows that no community is completely safe from this kind of modern anxiety. People didn’t like the current principal, Dominic Bauer, because he suspended students who took down posters for a Club America chapter, which is a high school branch of Turning Point USA. The club was turned down by the student council unanimously. Bauer later changed his mind, but he didn’t tell the council at first. During an interview with TMJ4, he said that removing or changing a poster was a very bad act of harassment or vandalism. It’s still not clear how that portrayal fits in with the rest of the school community, but the episode got enough attention to suggest it did not go over well.
None of these things make Hamilton a bad school. By most visible standards, it is still a working and ambitious institution that helps people in Butler, Lannon, Sussex, and the surrounding areas. The 96% graduation rate is the right kind of number for administrators to point to. When you take away everything else, that means the school is getting students to the finish line, which is the job.
It’s been about sixty years since the first class walked through the doors of Hamilton High School in Sussex. Now, the school is trying to keep a large, diverse group of students together, make programs that work, and sometimes get through bad weather. It looks like it works most of the time.
