People who have seen Off Campus, Amazon Prime Video’s newest romantic drama, have been reacting in a very specific way. People are finishing episodes and using search engines right away, but not to find out what happens next. They want to know exactly where Briar University is. That kind of question shows how well a show did its job.
Briar University is not a real place, that’s all. It was never there. In Elle Kennedy’s best-selling book series, the school is in a made-up Massachusetts town that Kennedy created just for the story. When Amazon turned the book into a TV show, they kept all of Briar University’s storylines. It is a private, Ivy League-style research college with a top-level ice hockey team and a social scene that seems almost too perfect to be real.
Kennedy builds a world with enough detail that the story works. Briar University isn’t just vaguely talked about. It has a culture, a campus feel, and a set of rules. The fact that there is a spinoff show called Briar U set in the same universe shows how fully realized this made-up world has become. When a made-up school gets its own long story, it’s no longer just a background.
It’s easy to see why people are confused—the show was filmed at a real university, just not in Massachusetts. Most of the work on Off Campus was done in Vancouver, Canada. The University of British Columbia filled in as Briar’s visual stand-in. The campus shots, some exteriors, and the general college vibe you see on screen all come from UBC’s grounds. In movies and TV shows, this is a common thing to do, but it can get confusing when people start to wonder if the school is really somewhere they could go.
From the production side, there is one thing that stands out. The show’s fraternity house, which is given a lot of social weight in the plot, was filmed at a craftsman-style home in the West Point Grey neighborhood of Vancouver. That building is now the home of Sigma Phi Delta, the engineering fraternity at UBC. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of real-world detail that makes the show feel like it wasn’t just put together in a studio.
Amazon really seems sure of what they have here. The eight-episode first season followed an elite hockey team and the people around them as they dealt with love, identity, and the messy start of adulthood. The premiere got so much attention that almost right away, a second season was ordered. Even on Prime Video, which has a lot of resources, that doesn’t happen very often with new dramas.
There may be something to the appeal having to do with the source material already having a fan base. Kennedy’s books had a dedicated readership before the cameras even started rolling. Adaptations that come with built-in excitement tend to keep it up when the production lives up to expectations. Off Campus seems to have gotten past that.
