Most people are unaware when a recall is subtly upgraded on a Wednesday afternoon. Most phones don’t have a dramatic press conference or a breaking news alert. Somewhere in a grocery store in Texas or Louisiana, cartons of eggs remain on shelves past their expiration date, waiting to be returned or discarded, while the FDA updates a page and agencies file reports. On August 12, federal regulators classified the Midwest Poultry Services egg recall as Class I, which is the agency’s highest risk designation.
The FDA does not use the term “class I” lightly. They define it as “a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” When it comes to a grocery store item, that is the most serious thing a federal food agency can say. Not a caution. Not a warning. a risk of significant injury.

The actual recall began three weeks prior. After environmental monitoring at their Texas farms revealed salmonella contamination, Midwest Poultry Services voluntarily recalled about 1.6 million dozen white shell and brown cage-free eggs, or about 19 million individual eggs, on July 22. After samples were gathered and genetic sequencing was performed, some of the strains were found to be similar to the outbreak that was spreading throughout 17 states. The CDC confirmed 26 hospital admissions and at least 98 infections by the end of July. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but the number of hospital admissions is too high to ignore.
The eggs were produced in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma between June 6 and July 3. Some of these cartons were lawfully kept in refrigerators and on store shelves for weeks after the outbreak was already being monitored because their sell-by and best-by dates extended all the way to August 17. It’s worth sitting with that detail. While federal investigators continued to piece together the origin of the outbreak, people continued to pick up these eggs, cook them for their children, and scramble them into weekend breakfasts.
The participating brands, which include Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Cal-Maine Sunups, and Country Morning, read like a typical grocery store. These aren’t obscure niche goods. The majority of people automatically grab these eggs. It’s quite possible that you completely missed this if you purchased eggs in the South or Southwest during the previous two months and didn’t keep up with the news. In order to identify impacted cartons, the FDA recommends that consumers look for plant codes P-1950 or 0840962 combined with Julian dates between 157 and 184.
The FDA’s own July 24 update contains an unsettling footnote: the agency stated that not all of the illnesses in this outbreak are related to Midwest Poultry Services. Further sources are still being looked into. Although federal investigators have not yet publicly identified any other known origin point, this suggests the contamination picture may be broader or more complex than what the recall alone captures.
It’s also important to consider the larger context in which this recall is occurring. With over 13,000 cases, the cyclosporiasis outbreak connected to lettuce is one of the biggest foodborne illness outbreaks in American history. Taylor Farms products have already been removed from shelves in 26 states due to a different salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños. Although food safety incidents are not uncommon, the weight of this cluster of concurrent outbreaks is different.
The FDA’s advice is straightforward if you bought any of the impacted eggs: avoid eating them. You can either throw them away completely or return them to the store where you purchased them for a complete refund. Fever, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are symptoms of salmonella that usually manifest 12 to 72 hours after ingestion. Severe illness is more likely to strike children under five, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
The three-week interval between the initial recall and the Class I designation is unsettling. It is reasonable to wonder if that indicates a system that operates more slowly than it ought to or if it represents the time required to perform appropriate epidemiological work. Most likely, the answer is a combination of both.
