Something really strange happened in American higher education on July 1, 2023. Twelve different community colleges in Connecticut stopped being twelve and became one. Most people now just call it “CT State.” When Connecticut State Community College opened, it wasn’t with a ribbon-cutting ceremony or a viral video. Instead, it was with paperwork, letters of accreditation, and the kind of institutional change that you can’t fully feel for years.
The main office of the new college is at 185 Main Street in New Britain. This is a pretty ordinary address for the largest community college in New England. From Enfield in the north to Bridgeport on the coast, there are twelve main campuses. Five satellite campuses are spread out in Meriden, Danbury, North Haven, Willimantic, and Bristol to fill in the gaps. There are a lot of places where this one institution is present, and it’s hard not to wonder if the original goals of the project are still being met.
On the same day that the merger happened, the New England Commission on Higher Education gave CT State its first accreditation. That’s an important detail. Accreditation doesn’t usually happen overnight, so getting it on the first day was meant to show that this wasn’t just a reorganization of staff but a real school with academic standing. Along with four regional state universities and Charter Oak State College, CT State is now part of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. This system is run by the Connecticut Board of Regents for Higher Education.
A total of about 70,000 students attended the twelve schools that came before it. That’s a lot of people whose academic lives are now managed by the same group. As of now, it’s still not clear whether the consolidation helps or hurts individual students. It probably depends a lot on which campus you’re on, what program you’re in, and how well local operations have handled the change.

Dual enrollment is one area where CT State is really making moves. The college works with more than 170 high schools in Connecticut to offer college courses that count toward graduation. These courses can be taught on college campuses or by certified teachers at high schools. Juniors and seniors in high school with a 3.0 GPA or higher and who rank in the top 20% of their class can take these classes for free. This is a big financial benefit for families who are weighing the cost of early college exposure against the benefits it brings.
Some people think that CT State doesn’t see dual enrollment as an extra program, but as a way to get students into college earlier and keep them in a system that can help them finish their degree. The High School Partnership waiver program has been going on for years at the colleges that came before it. It makes sense to use the same MOA template starting in the fall of 2025. It will be interesting to see if the institutional consistency leads to a better experience for students or just more uniform paperwork.
The college has more than 300 academic programs, ranging from traditional liberal arts paths to programs in cooking and making things. Christina Royal became interim president in August 2025. She is in charge of an organization that is still trying to figure out what it wants to be. A lot of things need time to settle down. It’s still being decided what CT State is, whether it feels like one cohesive college or twelve campuses that all use the same name.
There is no doubt that Connecticut chose to merge, make things easier, and grow. That choice will be judged by how well it works for the 70,000 students who are now in this system. It was given on the first day. It will take a lot longer to find the proof.
