On Apple’s education storefront, a quiet event takes place every June. Not a major occasion. The homepage does not have a countdown timer. For a few months, a promotion that appears in the middle of the month gives educators and students an excuse to finally buy the MacBook they’ve been putting off. The 2026 Apple Back to School Sale is anticipated to follow the same pattern, and if previous years are any indication, it might be among the best student discounts Apple has provided in recent memory.
The timing is not arbitrary. In the past, Apple has started its Back to School campaign near WWDC, the company’s yearly developer conference. Since the 2026 keynote was held on June 8, the majority of observers are considering the week of June 15 to be the most likely window. That is consistent with the June 17 opening date of the sale in 2025. Although nothing is confirmed yet, it would be wise for students who want to buy a Mac or iPad to hold off for a few more days.
The educational discount, which Apple offers year-round through its education store, isn’t the only thing that makes the promotion worth keeping an eye on. It’s the extra bonus on top. Accessories worth up to $199, such as the Apple Pencil Pro, Magic Trackpad, Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, were available to qualified customers last year. Unlike promotional mugs or discount codes that seem like an afterthought, those are genuine products with genuine value.
With this promotion, it seems as though Apple has been progressively improving what it offers. The agreement relied on gift cards and AirPods in 2021 and 2022. By 2025, Apple was paying attention to how students actually use their devices, as evidenced by the shift toward physical accessories, especially the Apple Pencil Pro. That pencil isn’t a gimmick for a graduate researcher annotating PDFs late at night or a design student sketching on an iPad. They would probably purchase the tool anyhow.

This year, eligibility has also become somewhat more structured. Apple tightened its verification procedures in the US and Canada earlier in 2026, switching to UNiDAYS as the norm for verifying student status. In the past, an email address ending in.edu was frequently sufficient. After entering their name, birthdate, and institutional email, students must wait for confirmation. It’s a minor annoyance, but it’s important to be aware of it before checking out.
In North America, the promotion usually lasts until the end of September, giving students most of the summer to make a decision. You don’t have to hurry. Around mid-July, the sale typically reaches the UK and Europe. In the weeks that follow, it expands to Asia and the Middle East. Due to their different academic schedules, Australia and New Zealand’s Back to School period already ran from January to the beginning of March.
The MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad Air, and iPad Pro—the core lineup that the majority of students would consider anyhow—have historically been eligible products. If eligibility is confirmed, purchases can be made at Apple retail locations or through Apple’s online education store. An often-overlooked detail is that parents purchasing on behalf of a qualified student are also included.
The specific accessories that the 2026 promotion will provide are still unknown. Apple hasn’t made any formal announcements. However, free AirPods or an Apple Pencil seem like reasonable expectations given the trend of the past few years. The math is fairly straightforward for anyone who is seriously thinking about getting a new Mac or iPad this summer: waiting a week or two could result in hundreds of dollars in extras at no extra cost.
