A student standing in line at an airport, a little nervous, with a laptop bag slung over one shoulder, and hoping that the seat they can barely afford will get them where they need to go has a subtle practicality. The expense of air travel is a real barrier for millions of students who travel abroad every year. This is why, upon closer inspection, the Turkish Airlines student discount seems like something worth learning about.
Turkish Airlines has positioned itself as one of the few large airlines with a well-defined, easily accessible student discount program—not a hazy “check our deals” scenario, but a program with actual numbers. While the age limit for domestic flights within Turkey is 25, students between the ages of 12 and 34 are eligible for international routes. Discounts of up to 20% are available on domestic routes and 15% on international ones. These are not two-day-limited promotional fares. Through the airline’s Miles&Smiles loyalty program, they are integrated into the reservation system.
Although it seems like a minor obstacle, getting the discount does require some setup, which is quite doable once you grasp the procedure. First, you create a simple, free Miles&Smiles account. Next, you add the student passenger type in the personal information section of your account. Turkish Airlines evaluates the application following the upload of a legitimate student document, such as an ID, an official-stamped university certificate, or an ISIC card. The processing window is normally seven business days. It’s not instantaneous, so preparation is important.

The baggage allowance is what makes the program more beneficial than a straightforward discount. In contrast to the standard allowance, student passengers on international routes are given 40 kilograms. That difference is immediately significant to anyone who has ever attempted to fit a semester’s worth of winter clothes into a 23-kilogram bag. Two pieces, each weighing up to 23 kg, are permitted on the piece concept routes. Additionally, international student tickets are eligible for a one-time free change with no penalty; however, any fare difference is still applicable.
There are a few worthwhile things to watch. Only scheduled flights operated by Turkish Airlines are eligible for the discount. Codeshare flights, Star Alliance partner routes, and AJet are not eligible. People are caught off guard when traveling with non-student companions because if a PNR includes multiple passengers on an international booking, each passenger in that booking must be a student in order for the benefits to apply. This is handled differently in domestic reservations, where the discount is only applied to the eligible students in a shared reservation.
Airport documents are also important. Turkish Airlines requires the original student ID or certificate, along with an official seal or wet stamp. A photocopy is insufficient. It’s the kind of small detail that doesn’t seem important until you’re at a foreign country’s check-in counter without the appropriate paper.
The 12-month student status must be renewed annually. It’s a minor administrative task, but when life gets hectic, it’s easy to forget. It’s probably a good idea to set a reminder when you first activate the program.
For students who travel frequently—to conferences, home for holidays, or between campuses—this program seems to add up significantly over time. When combined with additional baggage and flexible changes, the 15% off international base fares won’t seem like much on a single reservation, but it’s a more comprehensive offer than most airlines bother to put together. Depending on your route and schedule, it may or may not be the obvious first choice, but it is definitely worthwhile to check before making a reservation via a third-party app and losing out on advantages that were there the entire time.
