A school that didn’t exist eight years ago is now attracting educators from all over the nation to observe its classrooms because of something subtly amazing. Located on the northeastern edge of Perth, where the suburbs of Ellenbrook and Aveley merge, Aveley Secondary College opened its doors in February 2018 with about 260 Year 7 students and little more than a promise. Over 1,600 students enter the building each day. That’s more than just expansion; it’s a community pledging its future to one particular organization.
The necessity led to the establishment of the school. In the early 2010s, Ellenbrook was growing quickly, and if nothing changed, the current Ellenbrook Secondary College was expected to enroll more than 2,000 students. After committing in 2013 and missing the initial deadline of 2017, the state government finally opened Aveley SC at the beginning of 2018. The origin story is not the most glamorous. However, it’s important to focus on what transpired after those doors opened.
Aveley SC has always positioned itself around explicit, evidence-based teaching, which is the kind of methodical, planned approach that tends to yield tangible outcomes rather than eye-catching headlines. The College’s curriculum design was acknowledged as best practice by the Grattan Institute, an organization not known for bestowing praise. The Australian Education Research Organization has cited its instructors as national models of effective teaching strategies. That is an unusual level of attention from serious people for a school that is only seven years old.
The available programs demonstrate genuine ambition. There are specialized pathways in AFL, visual arts, and instrumental music, as well as an Academic Elite stream, a Sports Elite program, and the STARS Foundation, a program that supports young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. It’s remarkable how wide it is. The majority of schools at this age are still developing their schedules. It appears that Aveley SC made the decision early on to be a place where practically any type of student could find something that suited them.

That is supported by the facilities. Modern science labs, a commercial kitchen, a performing arts center, and industry-standard workshops are not the kinds of facilities you usually associate with a public school that is still forming new year groups. The institution seems to have been designed with a longer timeline in mind than most government initiatives permit.
However, it should be noted that the school has faced challenges. A 14-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by another student in April 2025 near a shopping center near the school, resulting in serious injuries. The incident raised awareness of behavioral issues that had apparently been developing for a while and caused concern in the community. That must be mentioned in any truthful description of the school. It’s still unclear how the school and its community will close the gap between a safe learning environment and a strong academic reputation in the years to come.
Aveley Secondary College is an experiment in what Australian public education can accomplish when it builds intentionally from the beginning, despite the temptation to reject that framing. The majority of schools gradually inherit their culture, which has been molded over decades by staff, students, and unwritten conventions. Everything had to be built all at once by Aveley SC. As a result, the school feels intentional in many respects. The real question is whether that intentionality turns out to be durable, and only time will tell.
