Iowa in July is a great place to watch baseball. In the afternoon, it’s very hot, little clouds of infield dirt form around the bases, and a parent is probably holding on to a stadium seat a little too tightly. That’s where the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Baseball Tournament takes place, and the 2026 tournament was great.
The games took place at two different locations from Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24. The 3A and 4A games were held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, while the 1A and 2A games were held at Merchants Park in Carroll. There are two locations, four classes, and enough close finishes to make everyone remember why they came in the first place.
In the 4A bracket, Pleasant Valley beat Sioux City East 5–4. It felt like the kind of semifinal that would take a year off your life as a coach. One run. Indianola had already looked good earlier in the week when they beat Southeast Polk 8-1 in the quarterfinals. They then set up a semifinal match with sixth-seeded Valley, who beat Waukee 2-1 in a quiet game. Some people may have been surprised by Valley’s run. Even though they were the sixth seed, they kept winning close games, which could mean they were calm or lucky. It’s probably both.
Wahlert Catholic beat North Polk 3-2 in a close game in 3A, and Assumption beat MOC-Floyd Valley 5-1. The size of Assumption’s win margin makes it look like they were in charge, but any game in a state tournament is usually more tense than the score shows. If you’ve ever watched a baseball tournament, you know that the scoreboard can be wrong.
Both the 2A and 1A games in Carroll were important. In the 1A semifinals, Moravia beat North Linn 5-2, which was a good showing for a team that doesn’t always get as much attention as the bigger schools. Newman Catholic, on the other hand, scored 10 runs against South Winneshiek. In tournament play, that kind of offensive output is hard to ignore.
The whole tournament was shown on KCRG. The 3A and 4A games were shown on KCRG 9.2, and the games for the lower levels were shown on KCRG 9.3. The KCRG app and website livestreamed the whole thing. That kind of news is important. These are high school athletes playing in front of their communities. Giving these games a real broadcast platform instead of just posting scores shows that Iowa values its prep sports.
It’s still not clear which of these shows will keep going strong into the next season. Baseball tournaments can change the way a team sees itself. Even if they only win one game, this can be the experience that defines a team for years to come. Some of the players here this week will talk about these games for a long time. If you know baseball, you know that a five-run margin and a one-run margin can feel the same when you’re leaving the field.
The most important thing that the 2026 Iowa High School Baseball State Tournament did was remind us why this format works. It took five days, four classes, and two cities. Straightforward and honest. It is known that Iowa takes its high school sports very seriously, and this week proved that.
