This spring, you’ll see the same serene scene in practically every lecture hall at a university. Laptops open, students’ eyes dart between a chatbot window and a professor’s, and they gently tap an AI to ask it to summarize the reading they didn’t finish. It is now almost unremarkable.
And that is, in a sense, the issue. Because the regulations controlling what technology does with everything it sees have not kept up with the technology’s surprisingly easy integration into classrooms.

Speaking with educators gives the impression that a step has been skipped in the conversation. In less than two years, schools transitioned from curiosity to dependence. Writing patterns, engagement times, and even keystroke pauses are now recorded by tutoring platforms. In order to determine attention, some pilot programs look at facial expressions. Better learning, quicker feedback, and customized paths are all part of the same pitch. When there is fine print, it’s usually buried under permissions that a fifteen-year-old can’t read.
This story is so familiar that it’s difficult to ignore. Ten years ago, social media companies made similar claims, and we know how that turned out. These days, academic, behavioral, and occasionally medical data are being gathered. A Midwest school district recently revealed that a vendor it had been using covertly for years had records on about 40,000 students, including disciplinary histories and IEP notes. The actual breach wasn’t particularly noteworthy. It was informal.

The other ghost in the machine is bias. In addition to embarrassing a government, the 2020 A-level exam scandal in England, where an algorithm routinely downgraded students from poorer postcodes, provided a sneak peek. Since then, researchers have discovered language models that, for the most part, still link “scientist” to male pronouns. When you force that inclination into an essay grader or a college recommendation engine, the damage quietly increases year after year, student by student. It can occasionally infect teachers. Seldom do algorithms catch themselves.
A few organizations are making an effort. A few universities, such as Schiller International, have begun incorporating ethics directly into their tech curricula, urging aspiring engineers to prioritize human dignity over efficiency. However, only around 25% of organizations in the larger industry have a formal AI conduct code. The others are improvising, which typically entails putting your trust in the vendor who presented the most seamless demonstration.
The fact that schools are currently among the most alluring targets for cybercriminals further complicates matters. Because the data is irreplaceable and the institutions are under-defended, education has surpassed healthcare and government as the most attacked sector, and ransom payments are becoming more frequent. Once a child’s medical record is copied into a learning platform, it can spread farther than anyone could have predicted at the time the consent form was signed.
The upside can’t really be argued against. These include transcription tools that allow deaf students to access lectures, AI tutors that adjust to a struggling reader, and scheduling systems that relieve overworked teachers. The question is whether we would approve of the trade if it were made explicit. According to privacy advocates, student data should be handled minimally, consensually, and securely, just like medical records. It’s a fair bar. It’s also far off for the time being.
It’s not really the technology that’s causing me anxiety as I watch this develop. It has to do with speed. Although they were human spaces, classrooms have always been flawed. What schools are ultimately willing to ask of AI may have a greater impact on whether they stay that way than what AI can accomplish.
