The times of year for awards in the world of education technology often blend together. If a press release is sent out, a few trade publications will pick it up. But by Monday of the next week, everyone has moved on. It would have been easy to forget about the fact that Discovery Education won three awards and was named a finalist for four more in the 2026 EdTech Awards. It’s not.
EdTech Digest has been giving out the EdTech Awards for sixteen years. They are not given out lightly. Solutions are judged on how well they work with students, how well they can be used, and what the program calls their “potential to drive meaningful change.” The last criterion is the one that really needs to be thought about because real change in K–12 education is hard to make and even harder to keep up.
Discovery Education’s winning ideas were very different from each other. The winner in the Product or Service category was Discovery Education Experience. In the Science Solution category, Science Techbook won. It is a K–12 curriculum that is based on phenomena-driven, three-dimensional teaching. The STEM Solution category was won by the STEM Careers Coalition, a national group that has linked more than 15 million students and teachers to real-world resources for career exploration. Three wins. There are three very different issues being dealt with. That width isn’t by chance.
From what I can tell, Discovery Education isn’t really making cool tools. Instead, they’re trying to solve a problem that doesn’t get talked about much: teachers are too busy, and most tech for education doesn’t really help. It makes more noise. Victor Rivero, Editor-in-Chief of EdTech Digest, said this plainly: “Discovery Education’s wins come at a time when AI is moving faster than most classrooms can adapt.” He thinks that the company is cutting through that noise instead of adding to it.

It’s still not clear if the rest of the industry will learn from that. There is a long history of edtech products that look great in demo rooms but don’t work well in real schools. Discover Education’s case is different, at least on paper, because of the size of it. Its solutions have helped more than 100 million students around the world, and 45 percent of K–12 schools in the U.S. are using them right now. That’s not a prediction. They are working numbers.
You should look into the STEM Careers Coalition by itself. 15 million students can access resources to help them explore careers. This sounds like a number you’d see on a sponsorship deck, but the program is likely to last longer because it is supported by a national alliance of business and nonprofit partners. Career-connected learning is one of the areas of K–12 education that needs more attention. The fact that this coalition was recognized along with core curriculum products shows that Discovery Education is committed to a student’s education throughout their whole life, not just the years that end with a test.
The four finalist awards, which cover math, reading, VR/AR learning, and career planning, give the picture more depth. When a business is in that many categories, it’s not following just one trend. It’s making something bigger.
The medals will be kept on a shelf in Charlotte. The more interesting question is what happens in the classrooms where these tools are used—whether students are more interested and better prepared, and whether teachers feel like they have real support instead of another platform that needs their attention. That’s not so easy to measure. But that’s the only way to measure what matters.
