Seeing a teen type a question into ChatGPT, read a summary, close the tab, and call it studying makes me feel a little uneasy. It happens all the time now. Up until recently, there wasn’t much solid evidence to argue against it. There was only gut feeling and maybe a vague feeling that something about the process seemed too easy to stick. Now there’s study.
Four hundred and five high school students in England, ages 14 to 15, were tracked by Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Microsoft Research as part of a study. Two historical texts—one about apartheid in South Africa and the other about the Cuban Missile Crisis—were given to the students to study in different ways. Some people used ChatGPT 3.5, an AI chatbot, without writing anything down. Some people took notes without AI. A third group put them both together. Three days later, the researchers came back without warning to see what the students had really learned and remembered.
There isn’t much that can be said against the results. Students who took notes did much better than those who relied only on the chatbot, whether they did it by themselves or with the AI. “Taking notes was a better way for them to remember what they had learned in the long term,” said Dr. Martina Kuvalja, a senior researcher at Cambridge and one of the study’s authors. Her approach was refreshingly straightforward: “No pain, no gain — if you make your own notes, you’re probably going to remember what you’ve learned better than if someone — or something — summarises it for you.”
Some people may not find any of this very surprising if they have really thought about how memory works. When you write, your brain has to process information instead of just taking it in. It seems like the point of taking notes is to make them less smooth. When a chatbot does the hard work of finding important facts, organizing them, and putting them in neat paragraphs, the student doesn’t have to do much. The data goes through without making a big difference.
The study is more complex than just a verdict against AI because the researchers also found things about what motivates people. Most of the students liked using the AI. A lot of them said they’d do it again. Some people think that this finding means the problem won’t go away any time soon and that simply not allowing AI isn’t a good solution either. Dr. Kuvalja agreed and said that chatbots could still have a real use: they could be used to spark interest, get students to read more, and help teachers start a conversation about a subject before the real learning starts.

That difference is important. Using AI to learn more, ask questions, and explore is not the same as using it to do the hard work of understanding for you. The study doesn’t say that AI shouldn’t be used in school. It seems to say that place is not the most important thing for how students learn and remember important things.
For parents, the practical lesson is pretty easy to see. The National Literacy Trust says that that the 60.9% of 13–18-year-olds who used generative AI for homework in 2025 may not be learning less, but they may be remembering less. It’s not nostalgia to tell kids to close the chat window and pick up a notebook. It turns out to be more scientific than we thought.
