Liberty High School: The Name Shared by Dozens of Schools, Each With a Story Worth Telling

More than a dozen states have school buildings bearing the name Liberty High School, and each one has its own unique personality, hallway posters, and senior class jokes. The fact that the name sounds more like a proclamation than an address may help to explain why so many communities selected it. Beneath the common branding, however, are truly distinct institutions with distinct histories, pressures, and moments that define them to those who actually enter.

The oldest is located in Brentwood, California, a city in Contra Costa County east of the Bay Area that has experienced significant growth since Edith A. Sellers, a single student, became the school’s first graduate in June 1905. The fact that the school’s first year produced just one student who was prepared to move on, in a structure that was essentially a backroom in the Brentwood Grammar School, is a detail that sticks with you. Since then, the school has expanded to almost 2,800 students, survived two significant fires—one caused by a botched chemistry experiment in 1918 and another by a disgruntled student in 1963—moved to its permanent location on Second Street in 1920, and won its first CIF state football championship in 2018. Voters approved a $122 million bond in 2016 to finance a renovation program that included a new football stadium, more parking, and an updated cafeteria. Nash Hall and the B.J. Callaghan Library bear the names of two long-serving principals on campus today as subtle reminders that institutional memory is important.

Just the Brentwood alumni list is impressive. Liberty produced keyboardist Brent Mydland, who joined the Grateful Dead in 1979 and stayed until his death in 1990. Chris Gruler, a first-round pick from a small-city California high school, was also chosen third overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2002 MLB Draft. The same Cardinal and Gold program produced Sione Vaki, an NFL safety for the Detroit Lions. Looking at that list, it seems like Liberty Brentwood has produced more than its reputation in the community might indicate.

Under the Patriots banner, the Issaquah School District’s Liberty High School in Renton, Washington, has 1,502 students and a four-year graduation rate of 94.9%. Recently, this campus gained notoriety for its DECA chapter, which sent students to compete internationally and returned with eight medalists who placed in the top 20 worldwide. The students competed against teams from Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Guam. In their respective events, four students placed in the top ten globally. It’s a result that merits more attention than it got, especially for a school that doesn’t always garner national attention.

On the morning of May 4, 2026, Liberty High in Bealeton, Virginia, a rural campus in Fauquier County, found itself in a different kind of story. On a Sunday night, a possible threat was reported through the school’s safety line by an anonymous tip. By Monday, a multi-jurisdiction law enforcement team was systematically sweeping the building before any staff or students had arrived. The school was empty when the first buses arrived. Threats will be “taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and addressed without hesitation,” according to Sheriff Jeremy Falls.It was determined that the threat lacked credibility. Pupils attended class.

It’s difficult to ignore how different these Liberty High Schools are from one another while still sharing many aspects of the typical American school experience, such as morning announcements, sports seasons, graduations, and hallways that smell like cafeteria food and industrial cleaner. Instead of bringing them all together, the name identifies them as belonging to the same expansive, intricate, sometimes inspiring, and frequently underfunded experiment that is American public education.
