For many families in Ireland, the back-to-school season is a time of quiet financial dread. The schoolbag that didn’t make it through the summer, the new uniform, and the shoes that somehow need to be replaced every year all add up more quickly than anyone anticipates. The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance was created for this reason, and it has significantly increased in size since 2026.
Social Protection Minister On June 3rd, Dara Calleary announced that the government would be investing €60.4 million in the program this year, up from €55.4 million in 2025. For the first time in the program’s history, the allowance has been extended to children ages two and three. As a result, about 37,000 more kids are anticipated to be eligible, and the reasoning is compelling. Additionally, preschool is expensive.

In 2026, children in second-level education between the ages of two and eleven will pay €160, while those over twelve will pay €285. As long as they are returning to full-time second-level education in an accredited school or college in the fall of 2026, young people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two are still eligible. For secondary school families who must deal with the reality of €50 sports jerseys and €80 school shoes, it’s a comparatively small amount. However, something is better than nothing, and this payment frequently comes at the perfect time for households that are already overburdened.
The allowance will be automatically given to over 109,000 families; no application or form is required. The Department of Social Protection says it will send confirmation via mail or MyWelfare accounts, and payments for those families are planned for the week starting on July 13. That amounts to more than €42 million being spent in a single week and covers about 202,000 children. However, automatic does not equate to guaranteed. Families are strongly encouraged to apply online at MyWelfare if they haven’t heard from the Department by June 9th.That is, even if they were paid last year.
It is important to fully comprehend the means test. The total weekly income of your household must be less than the specified thresholds, which are €726.70 for a single child and €78 for each additional dependent child. For larger families whose numbers might otherwise push them over, it is important to note that the Department applies that income threshold by counting all dependent children in the household. The Child Benefit, the Working Family Payment, the Domiciliary Care Allowance, and the Foster Care Allowance are among the payments that are completely excluded from the means calculation. Investments and savings are also evaluated, but the first €5,000 in capital is completely ignored.
You must be enrolled in an authorized work, education, or training program or receive a qualifying social welfare payment in order to be eligible. In most cases, you must also be receiving a Child Support Payment. There are some exceptions, such as those who receive maternity benefits, in which case the payment structure does not include a child component. If that describes your circumstances, it is still worthwhile to confirm your eligibility with the Department instead of assuming you are ineligible.
The deadline for applications is September 30, 2026. Families who have appealed a social welfare decision or are awaiting one should apply regardless of the hard deadline; the BSCFA application will only be delayed until the underlying decision is made. The Department has established dedicated phone lines for inquiries at 071-919 3318 and 0818 11 11 13, which are open Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Additionally, you can send an email to bscfa@welfare.ie.
The direction that this year’s extension indicates may be the most telling aspect of it. Including two and three-year-olds recognizes that educational expenses don’t wait until formal schooling starts, both practically and politically. It’s unclear if future years will see additional expansions, such as higher payment rates or wider income thresholds. However, as of right now, 2026 is the most inclusive iteration of this program.
