Instead of a university transcript, Zahirah Macwilson’s name is typically associated with a modeling campaign or theater poster. In some respects, though, the tale of her schooling is more fascinating than any part she has portrayed on Malaysian television.
Although she was born in Kuala Lumpur in February 1995, it would be inaccurate to describe her upbringing as “Malaysian” on its own. She grew up in Malaysia, Sheffield, UK, and Perth, Australia, as a result of her family’s frequent moves. That kind of upbringing—moving, settling down, then moving again—usually leaves a lasting impression. Her early instability may have contributed to her later seeming ease with managing turmoil.
She returned to Australia for further education, enrolling at Curtin University in Perth to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a Human Resources concentration. She was on the Dean’s List multiple times, according to most accounts, including her own social media posts. It’s not a minor detail. Many students find it difficult to handle just one course load; she was allegedly doing this while working as a model and actor back home.
This is where the story becomes really challenging. Her own narrative, which she made public years after the fact, states that she studied full-time for both her degree and diploma during the first four years of her professional acting career. She talked about having permission to skip a month of lectures in order to film a movie called Busker, then finishing up papers late at night once the shoot was finished. She also talked about squeezing six or seven subjects into a single semester in order to finish earlier and interning at Levi’s while acting as the brand’s spokesperson.

That strategy has an almost obstinate quality. The majority of individuals would have chosen just one lane. It seems that she declined to.
In addition to coming at class jet-lagged from professional travel, it appears that she operated a small cosmetics company on the side at this time. It’s unclear if any of that was long-term viable, and she has acknowledged that she occasionally pondered the same issue. Despite her fatigue, she continued to choose the front row over the rear, according to her own description.
It’s noteworthy that she wasn’t necessarily destined for business administration. According to other interviews, she initially had a preference for management and human resources before discovering that acting appealed to her more. Many young professionals, particularly those juggling prominence in entertainment with the expectation of a “real” certificate behind them, are familiar with the conflict between a practical degree and a creative urge.
It’s clear from following her journey that she valued the degree more as evidence of her identity than as a prerequisite for a job. She completed it. She has expressed this in her own work, portraying the years of sleep deprivation and late nights as something she would do again if given the chance.
Today, Macwilson is raising two kids and has been married to actor Aiman Hakim Ridza since 2020. Her time in college is less of a footnote and more of the basis for the discipline that has followed her profession. It’s difficult to ignore how frequently actors minimize their educational background, as if it were in conflict with their public persona. That wasn’t what she did. If anything, she embraced the grind, viewing it as an important element of the narrative.
